Lelie is a 1998 graduate of Radford High School in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he earned two letters each in football, track and basketball. He was selected to both the all-district and all-state teams in football and was an all-district choice in basketball and an all-league selection in track. Lelie was on the honor roll at Radford. Ashley Jovon Lelie was born Feb. 16, 1980 in Bellflower, California. His family makes its home in Beaufort, South Carolina.
 
Ashley Lelie became the first University of Hawaii player ever to be drafted in the first round of the NFL Player's Draft. The Denver Broncos selected Ashley with the 19th pick of the first round in the 2002 draft.  After spending four seasons with the Broncos, was picked up by the Atlanta Falcons prior to the 2006 season and after one season with the Falcons, Ashley signed with the San Francisco 49ers for the 2007 season.  He looks to be a long ball threat for the 49ers.

If you weren’t playing football, what career would you have chosen and why?
I would probably play pro basketball.  But if I couldn’t play a sport, I would like to be a history teacher because I love kids and I love history.
 
What do you do to prepare yourself for a game?
I try to stay relaxed and I try not to focus too much on the game.  I try to think about other fun things so I stay relaxed.
 
What would people be surprised to know about you?
That I am pretty good in math.
 
What three words would best describe you?
Quiet, humble and hard working.
 
What one person would you pick to join you on a deserted island?
I would take my girlfriend, but if she wasn’t available I would take Alicia Keyes.
 
What would you do if you were president for a day?
I would put more money into education and less money into the military.
 
Who has influenced your football career most?
June Jones, my college football coach.
 
What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?
I was a security guard over the summer one year in college and I had to stay in the same spot for twelve hours every day.
 
What was your first day in the NFL like?
A lot harder then I expected—I even threw up a couple of times.
 
You’ve got a private jet for the week.  Where are you going and what will you do?
I would probably go somewhere in the Caribbean and relax for a while.
